    • My children have been seeing Dr. Lynda and her staff for 10 years. My daughter has had several teeth "wiggled out" by the staff here. She has always had the most excellent care. My questions are always answered thoroughly and my concerns are always taken into account. The Water Laze System that they use had made extractions quick,... More

The Best and Worst Foods for Your Child's Teeth

    Last updated 6 months ago

Establishing healthy habits for your child is beneficial for his oral and overall health. Ensuring your child gets the nutrients he needs for strong, healthy teeth is as easy as choosing the right foods at snack time. Here is a look at which foods your pediatric dentist recommends for healthy young teeth—and which foods should be avoided:

    Healthy Snack Foods
Dairy, including yogurts, cheeses, and milk, are rich in calcium and vitamin D. Dairy acts as a buffer to neutralize acids that can cause tooth decay, so when you allow your child to have a treat, serve it with a glass of milk—or even chocolate milk

A glass of water can also help to wash away sugar and food debris if milk is not an option. Serve treats or sugary snacks after meals when saliva production is high to reduce the chances of tooth decay.

Crunchy fruits and vegetables such as celery, carrots, and apples not only contain water and other beneficial nutrients, but they also help to clean your child’s teeth, removing bacteria and plaque. If your child likes citrus, oranges are a great sources of vitamin C; however, they should be eaten in moderation because they contain acids that are hard on tooth enamel.

    Snacks to Avoid
Candy should not be a regular snack food in your child’s diet, as it contains high amounts of sugar and easily sticks onto or between teeth. Limit or avoid sweet drinks which are high in enamel-eroding acids as well as sugar. Foods that are hard in texture, such as pretzels, can chip or crack teeth, while processed carbohydrates, such as breads and potato chips, contain sugar and easily stick to teeth.

The children’s dentists at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry are here to help you establish mouth-healthy snacking habits for your child. Call us at (571) 223-5768 to schedule an appointment. You can also check out our pediatric dentistry team on our website to learn more about us!
