Five Tips for Creating an Oral Health Conscious Household for Your Children

Last updated 9 months ago

Using preventative care and making dental hygiene a priority is the best way to ensure that your child enjoys a lifetime of oral health. Creating a healthy oral hygiene routine begins as soon as your child can hold a toothbrush independently. Routine dental cleanings and exams with a pediatric dentist will help to reiterate your at-home efforts. You can encourage your children to be conscious of their oral health with these tips:

1.Make oral hygiene fun. For younger children, you can create a fun chart that awards stickers each time they brush and floss their teeth. You can also play music while brushing or create a song about brushing teeth.

2.Create a family outing around dental appointments. A simple family trip to the local arcade or park after a visit with the pediatric dentist can be a fun and motivating way to help your child make positive associations with dental visits.

3.Model healthy oral hygiene habits. Children naturally mimic the actions that they see their parents doing, so make sure that your children see you brushing and flossing on a daily basis. This creates the perfect opportunity to teach healthy habits.

4.Use fun leaning aides about brushing and flossing. Read books about dental health, or complete fun writing or coloring activities that incorporate oral health habits.

5.Establish a wholesome nutrition plan. Healthy eating choices can help in fighting decay and reducing the amount of bacteria that accumulates in the mouth. Teaching children about their food choices can be helpful in keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Sugary foods and juices can lead to decay and dental carries, and limiting these foods may prevent future dental problems.
