3 Questions to ask Your Dentist about Your Child's Dental Health

    Last updated 8 days ago

Caring for your child’s dental health is one of the many issues you face as a busy parent. Fortunately, you have a partner in your child’s dental health: your pediatric dentist. While you should always feel free to ask your children’s dentist any question you have, here are three common questions that you may have, answered:

    1.  Is My Child’s Oral Hygiene Adequate?

Bedtime and morning routines can be hectic at times, and your child may miss a spot brushing here or there. If, however, you child is consistently practicing poor brushing and flossing habits, your pediatric dentist will let you know. Your child’s dentist can also give your child a refresher on proper techniques as well as stress the importance of taking his or her time to brush.

    2.  Are There Any Developmental Problems with My Child’s Teeth?

Sometimes, a child may have teeth that are too crowded, too far apart, or missing altogether. Other times, a child may have an abnormal bite that could cause problems with the development of the jaw. Your pediatric dentist will screen for any problems and advise you on the next course of action if needed.

    3.  How Often Will I Need to Bring My Child Back for Dental Checkups?

Just as you should see the dentist every six months, your child should make biannual visits as well. In fact, because of the growth and development that occurs during childhood, your pediatric dentist may recommend visits more often. The best way to find out is to ask your pediatric dentist what he or she thinks is best for your child.

3 Tips for Caring for Your Child's Teeth After an Extraction

    Last updated 22 days ago

In most cases, your child’s pediatric dentist will avoid an extraction if at all possible. In some cases, such as with severe tooth decay or the presence of a baby tooth that has not naturally fallen out, an extraction may be necessary. Extractions may also be required if your child needs orthodontic work or is experiencing trouble with the third molars. While most extractions are relatively simple, proper aftercare is crucial for healing and comfort. Talk to your child’s pediatric dentist to see what he or she recommends, and follow these tips to ensure your child’s optimum oral health post-extraction:

    1.  Control Bleeding

Immediately after the extraction, it is vital to control bleeding in order to allow a clot to form. Your children’s dentist will likely place a gauze packing at the extraction site and will instruct you on changing the gauze.

    2.  Use Gentle Care

Once the clot forms, the extraction site should be protected. Do not allow your child to suck through straws, and discourage him or her from spitting or rinsing forcefully. Your pediatric dentist may recommend gentle rinsing with a saltwater solution. Be sure to follow the instructions given by your pediatric dentist regarding foods to eat and how to brush the surrounding teeth.

    3.  Ask About Spacers

Sometimes, it may be advisable to place a space maintainer after the extraction of a baby tooth. This is to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting and causing problems with the bite. If your child needs a spacer, your pediatric dentist will let you know.
